How can you help support the Ohio Agricultural Clearance Program,
the Ohio Food Program, and the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks?
As donated food supplies dwindle, and public and private funding decreases it is now, more than ever, essential that you have your voice heard.
By writing your elected state Representatives and Senators, you are supporting the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks and its programs to provide fresh Ohio grown fruits and vegetables, chicken and eggs, and other shelf stable products critical to making sure that no one in Ohio, accessing the emergency food assistance programs, goes hungry.
Educate them on the importance of our network.
Invite them to your pantries, foodbanks, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters to view the daily struggles we all encounter in the fight against hunger.
Extend an invitation to your local events and meetings.
Encourage them to volunteer, so they can spend a day in your agency and meet and serve clients.
Thank them for their continued support.
Remember, without the support from Governor Bob Taft and the Ohio General Assembly, these programs could cease to exist.

As Ohio continues to face economic turmoil, the number of individuals and families served by the emergency food assistance network is increasing dramatically. Challenging economic times have simultaneously brought increases in demand for emergency food assistance and decreases in funding from a variety of sources. Consider the following facts:
State funding provided to Ohio foodbanks that is intended to last one year is being depleted in less than six months due to high emergency food demands;
Costs of food transportation and distribution – including fuel costs, insurance and vehicle maintenance – are increasing exponentially; and
In almost half of the families served by foodbanks, family members are working, but still do not earn enough to make ends meet.
Ohio has led the nation in establishing and maintaining a model funding program to support hunger relief in our state. All state dollars are used to purchase food or improve the food distribution network – no state funds go to administrative support. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has described this program as “one of the most successful, cost-effective public-private partnerships currently operating in the state of Ohio.”
In 2006/2007, Ohio should:
1) Increase funding to $5.5 million per year and create a permanent line item to support the Ohio Food Program and the Ohio Agricultural Clearance Program operated by the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. [ODJFS item 600-620, Title XX]
2) Add $500,000 per year in funding to the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks to partially support the increasing cost of transportation, storage and distribution of donated and surplus food and grocery items to the emergency food assistance network.
Give low-income working families the tools they need to succeed…
3) Support and provide funding to implement Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) emergency grocery programs.
4) Provide start-up funds to support public/private partnerships between foodbanks and County Department of Job and Family Services offices to implement out-stationing joint ventures to ensure that low-income Ohioans can apply for public benefits.
5) Maintain and expand Ohio’s Food Stamp waiver request to the United States Department of Agriculture to extend Food Stamp benefits to unemployed able-bodied adults who reside in Labor Surplus and high unemployment areas.
The Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks (OASHF) is Ohio’s largest charitable food assistance network. The Association is a statewide, member-supported organization, which represents the 12 certified America’s Second Harvest Foodbanks who distribute food and grocery items to more than 3,000 member charities in all 88 Ohio counties. Member charities consist of food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other charitable emergency food assistance programs that supplied more than 86 million pounds of food and grocery items to more than two million low-income households in 2004.
